Meistergram machines were originally designed to use alphabet or font disks supplied by CEC Designs, Inc. The information on the disks was scrambled, and these disks required a "copy protection key" to read into the machine.
A few years ago, this requirement was eliminated for newer zig-zag machines:
However, a "backdoor" was provided in the software for older machines: Meistergram M900, M800, and M700 upgrade. By entering a password, these machines can read "keyless" disks.
This document describes how to use keyless disks with these older Meistergram models.
NOTE: This procedure will only work with "Keyless" disks. "Keyed" disks must be exchanged, converted, or replaced by the font disk supplier.
From the "Select Command>" prompt, press key "I"
The display will show the machine type, system software date, and security
level:
"900XLCFv2.0N 01/26/93 Level>N >"
Enter the new level by typing:
"Q900XLC" for M900XLC and M700 Disk
Upgrade machines
"QSECRET" for M800 machines
Note that you have to use UPPER CASE letters, and that the keys will not display on the screen as you are typing.
The display will add a "#" to show that the password is
accepted:
"900XLCFv2.0N 01/26/93 Level> N><#>"
Press ENTER. The screen will now show:
"Select Command><><P>"
( the ""
indicates that the password is active)
"Keyed" Meistergram disks have the alphabet or design data scrambled. The "KEY" contains instructions on how to unscramble the alphabet. If the key is lost or damaged, the data on the disk cannot be unscrambled by the machine.
Turning on this option also activates all of the "TEST" level diagnostics. You may wish to disable these after reading the keyless fonts.
